Surveys, Reports, and Dashboards

The systematic gathering of data from students is intended to inform actions that improve the overall student experience.  The Office for Institutional Effectiveness and Planning coordinates the data collection for two regularly administered student surveys, the National Survey of Student Engagement and the SUNY Student Opinion Survey.  For each, summary reports and data dashboards are available. The office also oversees the writing and communication of a number of other reports including analyses of overall assessment activities and general education assessment.  Reports for discontinued surveys are also available by year or by type.

NOEL LEVITZ COLLEGE STUDENT INVENTORY (CSI)

As part of our federal Title III grant efforts, all incoming first-year students received an electronic invitation to complete the Noel Levitz College Student Inventory (CSI). The CSI is a nationally recognized readiness assessment for incoming students. The results are useful for identifying student strengths and weaknesses in their preparation for college.

The NSSE collects survey responses from first-year students and seniors.  Buffalo State University conducts this survey on a 3-year cycle.  The results offer insight to the time and effort students dedicate to their college education and to the ways institutions facilitate student learning.  Topics in this dashboard include student perceptions of indicators of engagement such as activities involvement, institutional emphasis, personal gains, quality of interactions, and their overall experience.  Using the drop-down menus on the left, data can be analyzed for groups of students on the basis of sex, race/ethnicity, and class (freshmen, seniors).  Results are organized by NSSE into themes of Academic Challenge, Learning with Peers, Experiences with Faculty, and Campus Environment.  Buffalo State also provides NSSE data for Perceived Gains and Overall Experience.

Institutional Dashboards

Two diversity dashboards are available.  Each is based on regularly administered surveys (SUNY Student Opinion Survey and National Survey of Student Engagement) and allows users to select results based on student characteristics.  The first is an inclusion dashboard based on items taken from the SUNY Student Opinion Survey that allows users to analyze the data by specific groups of students.  The second is an engagement dashboard based on items taken from the National Survey of Student Engagement and allows users to analyze the data by specific groups of students.

In the fall of 2018, Buffalo State implemented a new method of assessing student learning in its general education program (Intellectual Foundations or IF14).  Assessment is conducted on a 5-year cycle and the results are presented here.
